To transport your dog safely in the car, there are multiple safety measures and products available. It’s essential to select a comfortable and appropriate solution for your pet and ensure that it’s correctly installed and attached to the vehicle.
Crate or Carrier
When traveling by car, using a crate for your dog can provide both safety and security. Moreover, if your pet is accustomed to being in a crate due to training, it can make the transportation process even smoother.
If you are traveling and need to pack light, a pet carrier can be a convenient and lightweight substitute for a metal crate. Additionally, it can be more practical if you are staying away from home.
Travel harness with car seat belt
Most pet shops carry a range of pet-friendly harnesses in different sizes. These can be easily secured onto your pet and clipped into place, enabling your furry companion to safely occupy the front or back seat of the car, or even the boot.
Hammock
A dog car hammock is a type of seat cover that is designed to protect the back seat of your car from dirt, hair, and scratches caused by your dog. It is called a hammock because it hangs between the back seat and the front seat, creating a comfortable and secure area for your dog to ride in. A dog car hammock is usually made of a durable, waterproof material that is easy to clean and can be attached to the headrests of the front and back seats.
Boot Gate
To prevent your dog from jumping to the front of the vehicle, it is advisable to install a boot gate if your dog prefers to sit in the boot. A boot gate also ensures the safety of your dog and passengers in case of an accident. However, your dog will still need to be secured using a harness or crate.
Booster seat
A booster seat for dogs is a type of pet travel accessory that helps to elevate a small dog to a height that allows them to see out of the car window while traveling. It is designed to be installed on the back seat of a car and comes with adjustable straps that can be used to secure the booster seat in place. The booster seat also has a harness attached to it to keep the dog secure while in transit. This type of accessory is particularly useful for small dogs that may have trouble seeing out of the car window or for dogs that get anxious while traveling in the car.
Car ramps
A car ramp for dogs is a tool that can help your furry friend safely enter and exit your vehicle. It is a portable and lightweight ramp that can be used for dogs of all sizes and ages. The ramp is typically made of durable materials such as plastic, aluminium or wood, and is designed to provide a non-slip surface to prevent your dog from slipping and injuring themselves. The ramp can be placed next to your vehicle’s door and secured in place, allowing your dog to comfortably climb up or down. Car ramps for dogs are particularly helpful for older dogs, dogs with mobility issues, or dogs recovering from an injury or surgery.
The Do’s
- Keep your pet safe and secure during car travel by using a harness, crate, or carrier.
- Remember to pack plenty of water for your pet to drink and stay cool, especially during hot weather.
- Keep the air conditioning on or open a window slightly to provide fresh air but avoid blowing it directly in your pet’s face.
- Take regular breaks on long car trips to allow your pet to stretch, drink water, and use the bathroom.
- Help your pet feel more comfortable by bringing familiar items such as toys or blankets on the trip.
- If your pet tends to get car sick, talk to your vet about possible medication to ease their discomfort.
The don’ts
- It’s not recommended to allow your dog to travel with their head out of an open window as it can be dangerous and can cause eye and ear damage due to debris and wind.
- If your dog is travelling in the front seat, make sure to turn off the passenger airbag and move the seat back as far as possible.
- It’s best not to feed your pet right before travelling, allow at least two hours before hitting the road to prevent motion sickness.
- Never leave your dog in a hot car, even for a short amount of time, as the temperature inside a car can quickly rise and lead to heatstroke or even death.
